No less than 64 people lost their lives in a police operation against the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the Brazilian state's past.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials said. Over 80 suspects were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts erupted when around 2,500 security personnel initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with armed resistance, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives said.

The International human rights organization stated it felt "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas close to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the main base of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

Local authorities stated a minimum of 50 of those killed were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Many residents were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Locals have described the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Transport routes stay blocked throughout the region.

Gang Growth

The criminal network has been growing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Local law enforcement stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were confiscated in the operation, along with numerous weapons.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Dozens of the suspects are believed to be members of a faction from the northern region who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.

Larger Framework

Major law enforcement actions are not uncommon in Brazil before major international events in the nation.

The United Nations climate conference the climate conference is taking place in the northern city of Belem in November.
