Bellingham Has to Eliminate the Nonsense to Secure a Star Role With Tuchel.

If Jude Bellingham hopes to force his way into England’s top team, the smart move to eliminate the unnecessary reactions. His reaction upon realizing that the substitute board was going up after an evening of uneven play in the match against Albania was unacceptable.

"I don’t want to make more out of it but I stand by my words 'behaviour is key' and respect towards the teammates who substitute on," commented the coach. "Choices are taken and you must accept them when you're on the field."

The midfielder must understand. It was unnecessary for a tantrum. Kane had recently scored to make England 2-0 up in an inconsequential qualifier, the game had six minutes to go and the player, following an inconsistent display, had just been booked for fouling the Albanian striker. This was hardly a debatable decision. Actually it might have been reckless for the head coach to leave Bellingham on given that there was a chance he would make himself ineligible of the opening game of the World Cup by getting a another booking.

Drawing Attention Upon Himself

Yet Bellingham drew all eyes toward himself. There was no disguising the young midfielder's frustration upon understanding that he was going to make way for Morgan Rogers. His arms went up in exasperation and although he shook Tuchel’s hand after making his way to the sideline it was obvious that Tuchel was displeased.

Here lies the test facing Bellingham. He congratulated Rashford for providing the assist for the captain to nod home his second of the night, but the rest was counterproductive. It's not like protesting was going to alter the decision. The German has talked so much about honoring the team structure and the importance of behaving correctly.

In the Spotlight

The midfielder, omitted from the team last month, is being watched carefully after returning to the team recently. In effect his place has been in question and his actions haven't benefited him through his behavior to his substitution as the national team rounded off a flawless qualification run by overcoming a feisty challenge from their opponents.

The Coach's Plan

This implies the jury is out on whether the squad perform optimally with Bellingham in the team. The performance was not definitive. Tuchel tried new things by the coach at the start. He has given England organization and direction in recent months, employing a No 6, a No 8, a playmaker and dedicated wide players, but it felt different versus Albania. Jarell Quansah was given his first cap, Adam Wharton was in the starting lineup internationally and the role of the defender as a part-time midfielder meant there was passing resemblance to Manchester City’s historic treble-winning side.

Inconsistent Display

His performance was inconsistent. He created an opportunity for his teammate during the second half but often looked trying too hard. He made many rushed, misplaced passes. An unnecessary confrontation with an Albania midfielder early on. England were ragged after halftime. An opportunity for Albania resulted from Bellingham squandered possession. His booking occurred when an opponent took the ball to Broja and brought down Broja.

Depth Makes the Difference

In the end England’s depth proved crucial. Tuchel threw on Phil Foden, who appeared more comfortable to the role in which Bellingham operated during the first half, and Bukayo Saka. Later Saka whipped in a corner for Harry Kane to open the scoring. This served as a reminder that set pieces will be crucial next summer.

Relationship Not Broken

However, Bellingham was the story. The brilliance of Rashford's cross for Kane's goal was somewhat overlooked amid the drama of the player change. After the final whistle, the focus was on the midfielder. The coach approached from behind and directed Bellingham in the direction of the travelling England fans. Their relationship is not broken. Tuchel hasn't decided to discard Bellingham yet. However, whether Tuchel is inclined to offer him the central position is not guaranteed.
