Big 12 Conference Commissioner Calls Notre Dame Remarks Following CFP Snub as ‘Totally Out of Bounds’

At a public rebuke, Brett Yormark stated that Notre Dame's AD, Pete Bevacqua, was “totally out of bounds” for his criticisms targeting the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Root of the Controversy

The Fighting Irish maintains a football scheduling alliance with the ACC and is a participating member in all other sports. Bevacqua has contended that the ACC hurt Notre Dame’s opportunities to make the College Football Playoff, instead pushing for the inclusion of the University of Miami.

“The ACC do wonderful things for Notre Dame, but we bring tremendous football value to the ACC, and we didn’t understand why you would go out of your way to try to hurt us in this selection,” Bevacqua stated.

Miami ultimately received the CFP spot over Notre Dame, largely due to securing the head-to-head meeting between the two schools. Bevacqua also claimed that the ACC conducted a targeted social media effort over several weeks indicating its support for Miami.

A Strong Reaction

Subsequently on Tuesday, the Big 12 commissioner spoke about the comments at the Sports Business Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum.

“In my view his actions has been unacceptable,” Yormark said. “He is completely out of bounds in his method and if he was in the room, I’d say to him the same thing.”

The criticism is particularly striking given Bevacqua’s special role. He serves on the College Football Playoff Management Committee alongside the ten FBS conference commissioners, representing the interests of independent Notre Dame.

Historical Context and Future Moves

The commissioner further pointed out the support the ACC provided Notre Dame in the pandemic-disrupted 2020 season, providing the Irish a complete ACC schedule and a berth in its championship game.

“It has been unacceptable,” he said again. “It’s been unacceptable criticizing the ACC commissioner, when they helped Notre Dame during Covid...”

Talk had spread about Notre Dame possibly leaving the ACC and partnering with the Big 12. However, the commissioner's pointed comments on Tuesday appear to make such a move unlikely in the immediate future.

Notre Dame, who reached the CFP championship game last season, have announced they plan to decline a bowl game after missing out this year.
