A bulky bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the year.

The winning offer for the 243kg fish was submitted by the operator of a popular sushi chain, which operates locations throughout Japan and overseas.

"The first tuna heralds fortune," commented the business owner, a regular bidder at the yearly January sale.

Referred to as the Tuna King, this industry figure is renowned for placing substantial bids for bluefin tuna at these high-profile year-opening auctions.

Bidding Shock and Historic Past

Following the auction, the winner told journalists that he was "surprised at the amount," stating, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This new purchase exceeds his previous notable purchases:

  • He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1 million).

Even after once saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now gone on to surpass his personal record once again.

A Tradition of High Prices

The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically associated with exceptionally high prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a separate food company, which announced the fish would be served at its eateries throughout the country.

The frenetic energy at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a major event in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Swift Service

The extremely valuable tuna was promptly prepared for diners at the bidder's sushi chains soon after the auction was finished.

"I feel like I've started the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so auspicious as the year gets underway," said one satisfied diner.
