French authorities will start stopping migrant vessels in English Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to begin intercepting small boats in the Channel, following months of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the President urging him to back the plan and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French security forces have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their migrants, according to official confirmation.
French authorities have rarely intervened to stop the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and individuals.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson states personnel will start intervening at sea, with the aim of protecting lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a possible method to disable the propellers of the vessels.
The decision to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive strategy this warmer season, which ceased when the former Interior Minister departed from office.
That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Currently French officials will once more be permitted to stop boats before they pick up migrant passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's uncertain how the vessels will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are presently delaying the commencement of interceptions and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for methods to adjust to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the past.
UK immigration authorities and Downing Street have been approached for comment.
