Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The speculation about the recent awards show was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
